LAS VEGAS (AP) - A state-protected cactus may become a thorny snag for a developer with plans to build a subdivision near Red Rock Canyon.
Developer Jim Rhodes wants to build houses, businesses and maybe
a school on 2,400 acres on a mesa east of the popular hiking, climbing, biking and picnicking area.
But growing on the hillside land is the Blue Diamond cholla, a stubby, big-needled cactus that is among 24 plants the state considers "critically endangered."
The presence of protected plants has not typically impeded building projects in Nevada, but developers have sometimes been compelled to alter plans to accommodate them.
Public opposition to Rhodes' plan is growing among those who want to protect the cactus.
Clark County commissioners are expected to vote this week on Rhodes' proposal.
