LAS VEGAS (AP) - A 25-year veteran of the Las Vegas Metropolitan
Police Department died in a collision on U.S. Highway 95 about 50 miles south of Las Vegas.
Police say 49-year-old Daniel Leach was on the way to a jail to pick up prisoners for transport back to Las Vegas when the accident occurred this morning near Searchlight.
Investigators say Leach died after his van clipped the second trailer of a 10-wheel dump truck that was making a left-hand turn.
Leach was beginning his shift at the time of the 5:45 a.m. accident.
He was the only occupant in the van. Two occupants of the dump truck were uninjured.
He is the third officer to die this year in a vehicle crash while on duty.
