NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) - Authorities say an off-duty Las Vegas police officer is dead and one or more assailants are sought after a shooting in the garage of a home in North Las Vegas.

North Las Vegas police Officer Chrissie Coon says the officer died in an exchange of gunfire with one or more assailants shortly after midnight as he arrived home near Lone Mountain Road and Bruce Street.

Coon says it may have been an attempted robbery.

Clark County Undersheriff Rod Jett says it appears to be a random act.

The name of the 30-year-old officer was not immediately made public.

Jett says he had been on the police force about two years, and was assigned to a West Las Vegas patrol area.
