LAS VEGAS (AP) - A judge gave a fired North Las Vegas police officer 30 more days to decide whether to take a plea deal or stand trial on felony charges that he sought dates and sexual favors from women he stopped for traffic violations.
James Vernon Clayton tried Thursday to plead guilty to five misdemeanor charges of misconduct by a public officer and oppression under color of office. The charges could get him up to five years in jail.
But Clark County District Court Judge James Bixler refused to accept the plea when the 40-year-old Clayton refused to say he was guilty of seeking sex in return for dismissing tickets.
The judge reset Clayton's arraignment for Dec. 8.
Clayton was fired Jan. 28 following his arrest last December.
