LAS VEGAS (AP) - The Clark County coroner says a 32-year-old man
killed by Las Vegas police on July 1 was shot in the back.
Police have said Detective Jeremy Hendricks opened fire after John Paul Hambleton ran away and scuffled with plainclothes detectives investigating a sexual assault case involving a girl under the age of 14.
Coroner Mike Murphy ruled Hambleton's death a homicide and scheduled an Aug. 14 inquest to determine if the death was justified, excusable or criminal.
The coroner says an initial report that Hambleton died of a gunshot wound to the chest was a "clerical error."
Hendricks is an 11-year police veteran. He's on paid leave pending results of a departmental review and the inquest.
