LAS VEGAS (AP) - A major piece of Nevada's identity is having a birthday.
Clark County, home to Las Vegas, was created 100 years ago Wednesday when Lincoln County was split into two. Nevada's population on July 1, 1909, was less than 82,000 and the newly created Clark County was home to just 4 percent of the state's residents.
When its population was tallied officially for the first time during the 1910 census, the county had grown to become a home for 3,321 people.
The county, created from the southern half of Lincoln County, is named for William Andrews Clark, a mining and railroad magnate who gave Las Vegas its start when he established a maintenance stop for his San Pedro, Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railroad.
More than 2 million people now live in Clark County - nearly 72 percent of the state's population.
