A School of Many Firsts
Cold Springs
Reporter: Terri Russell

Cold Springs Middle school is the latest school to open here in Washoe County, it's the first of its kind middle school here housing fifth, sixth, seventh and 8th graders all under one roof.

Principal Roberta Duvall was busy today helping students navigate their way through t a brand new school.

At 168,000 square feet it's not as easy as you might think.

The school is housing kids of a variety of ages, from fifth to 8th grade.

In Joan Mitchell's 5th grade class, kids probably won't see much of their older classmates.

But 6th seventh and 8th graders will learn in classes where there will be more than one teacher...and those teachers will work with each other. Looking for ways to incorporate math, english, science and social studies into each other.

Duval says, "They work together kind of as a large team developing a lesson."

It was a little more than a year ago when ground breaking began on the Middle School. Construction was sure to incorporate new technology so a computer driven classroom like this was possible. Lead teachers were in place by November.

All the planning it appears paid off. Today no big problems arose to make the first day of school about anything but class schedules, different faces, new teachers, and the right hallway.

There is more construction going on here in Cold Springs. Expect more houses and businesses in the area, a town center in which the school is the focal point.
