RENO, Nev.—June 21, 2010 – Rusty Allen has had a very successful saddle bronc riding career having qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo five times.

The talented athlete is looking for a sixth having just missed being among the top 15 in the world standings in 2009. And while he is currently ranked 34th in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings, he might have just changed everything at the fourth performance of the Reno Rodeo.

Allen matched up with the reigning world champion saddle bronc horse, Spring Planting of the Flying Five Rodeo Company, for an outstanding 88-point effort. Combined with his ride here on Sunday night, he now has command of the over-all standings with a total of 167 points.

“There’s nothing better than coming to Reno and have that kind of horse drawn and to have it work out,” Allen said. “Every jump you’re on the edge. You never feel like you’re in control.”

Having control of the standings now should earn him a trip back here for Saturday night’s final round. Allen has yet to win a set of championship spurs from the Reno Rodeo and with the big paychecks available, it could improve his position in the standings significantly.

The top of the leaderboard in bareback riding was packed with 82-point rides at the Reno Rodeo on Monday night. The five contestants are part of a six-man tie for first place in the second round. Ethan McNeill from Grantsville, Utah, Matt Bright from Azle, Texas, Jared Keylon from Fort Scott, Kan., Joe Gunderson from Agar, S.D.., and Jessy Davis from Payson, Utah, are all hoping to get a check.

Bright and Gunderson are now tied for second place in the over-all standings with 159. Dusty LaValley from Bezanson, Alberta leads with 163.

In the women’s barrel racing, Jolene Stewart, from Springer, Okla., took the lead in the over-all standings after winning the first round and having the fast time of the rodeo Monday. She took her horse J.L. Dash to Heaven around the pattern in 17.15 seconds, just off of her previous time of 17.14. Stewart is training the horse for Jud Little Ranches and has primarily just competed at futurities. This is the first big rodeo the duo has competed at. .

The fourth performance of the “Wildest, Richest Rodeo in the West” begins at 7 p.m. Monday. Tickets range from $12 to $25 and are available at www.renorodeo.com or by calling 800-225-2277. For more information, please call 775-329-3877.
