RENO, NEV.; June 19, 2010 --- Hometown cowboy Jade Corkill enjoyed a wild welcome in Reno on Saturday night, and not just because he and his header from Tennessee, Chad Masters, roped the fastest steer in history last December.
No doubt, fans at the 91st Reno Rodeo had watched the pair post that history-making 3.3-second run at the 2009 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR), and were especially proud of the Fallon-raised Corkill.
He didn?t let them down on Saturday. Corkill and Masters picture-perfect 6.0-second run was the fastest of the performance and matched their 6.0 from slack to push them to the lead in the team roping average.
The Reno Rodeo is a Gold stop on the Wrangler Million Dollar Tour presented by Justin Boots, and will crown average champions on June 26. In the meantime, Masters and Corkill will also compete in the lucrative Bob Feist Invitational jackpot roping in Reno on Monday.
PRCA world standings leader Rod Hay of Alberta took the victory lap in saddle bronc riding aboard Flying U?s Short Fusin, but it was fellow Canadian Dustin Flundra who truly moved the crowd. Flundra scored 75 points on Flying Us West Hills, then walked right up to the little gelding and caught him in the middle of the arena.
Flundra slid his bronc saddle off and patted West Hills, then removed the former saddle horse?s bronc halter for the last time. Cotton Rosser was retiring the decorated AQHA-registered horse more than a decade after his owner had given up staying aboard and donated him to the West Hills College bronc riders.
Colroado bareback rider Heath Ford?s 82-point ride aboard Rosser's Short Bar claimed top honors in that event, while Ben Goodman, who lost his home in Beaumont, Texas, to Hurricane Katrina five years ago, posted a 4.3-second run to move to a third-place split in the second round of steer wrestling.
Joseph Parsons, 25, moved to third in the second round and second in the average of tie-down roping with his 9.5-second run Saturday night, while two barrel racers moved into the top three spots in their event. Idaho's Kyna Johnson rounded the pattern in 17.16, followed closely by Utah?'s Marcie Jarvis with a 17.18.
Steve Woolsey was bucked off hard in the saddle bronc riding, but turned around to get on his re-ride bull " Flying U's half Mexican fighting bull The Liberator " and made it count with 83 points to move into a tie with Ben McPherson for second in the round.
The third performance of the "Wildest, Richest Rodeo in the West" begins at 7 p.m. Sunday. Tickets range from $12 to $25 and are available at www.renorodeo.com or by calling 800-225-2277. For more information, please call 775-329-3877.
