RENO, NEV., June 24, 2011 --- World champions about in the final performance of the Reno Rodeo.
In the team roping, 16 gold buckles will be vying for a pair of trophy spurs. Jake Barnes who has seven world titles and Walt Woodard with two are in second place in the over-all standings. Barnes, from Scottsdale, Ariz., and Woodard from Stephenville, Texas have a total time of 11.3 seconds. Turtle Powell also from Stephenville and Jhett Johnson from Casper, Wyo., took the lead away from them at the eighth performance on Friday night with a total time of 10.3.
Reigning world champs, Trevor Brazile and Patrick Smith are in fifth place with 11.7. Brazile, from Decatur, Texas, won his first world title in the heading last December while Smith, from Midland, Texas, won his second in the heeling. The heading buckle was one of three that Brazile earned last year. He also collected his eighth all-around and third tie-down world title last year.
Rounding out the twelfth spot in the team roping are the father and son duo of Allen and Joel Bach who live in Parker County Texas. Allen Bach has won four world championships.
In the bareback riding, the reigning world champion Bobby Mote qualified in third place. Mote, from Culver, Ore., has four world titles to his credit. Trying to keep him from earning a pair of spurs will be Texans Wes Stevenson and Tilden Hooper who are ahead of Mote in the standings.
Cody Ohl has been one of the toughest tie-down ropers in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association for over a decade. The six-time world champion proved that he can still compete with the best of them when he took the lead here on Friday night. The Hico, Texas, resident has a total time of 17.4 seconds. Right behind him is last year’s Reno Rodeo champion Joseph Parsons from Marana, Ariz., with a 17.8.
