RENO, NEV., June 21, 2011 --- The reigning world champion in steer wrestling, Dean Gorsuch, from Gering, Neb., has put himself in position to win his first set of Reno Rodeo championship spurs.
Gorsuch had a 4.1 second run in the first round of competition then came back and followed it up with a 4.3 during the Tuesday night performance. His total of 8.4 seconds on two head is just two-tenths behind leader Todd Suhn.
A nice check from the $2.1 million dollar rodeo would help Gorsuch in his quest for a sixth Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) qualification. He is currently ranked 17th in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings, so any money that he wins here could move him into the top fifteen before the lucrative “Cowboy Christmas” Fourth of July run begins.
The sixth performance of the Reno Rodeo saw three bull riders have successful outings. Leading the way was Allen Helmuth, the reigning Dodge National Circuit Finals champion Allen Helmuth from Ellensburg, Wash. Helmuth rode the Flying U Rodeo bull named Holey Slinger for 83 points. This currently tied for third place and he is nearly assured a place in Saturday night’s final round.
There was also a 77 and a 75, by Tyler Thomson from Black Diamond, Alberta and Shane Proctor from Grand Coulee, Wash., respectively. Through the first six performances, there have only been 12 bull riders that have been successful. There are 24 more bull riders left to compete before Saturday night and they are hoping to change that statistic.
