RENO, NEV., June 21, 2011 --- The championship spurs awarded to each of the event winners and the all-around champion at the Reno Rodeo are some of the most coveted awards in rodeo.
Todd Suhn, from Hermosa, S.D., knows just what it means to win the Wildest Richest Rodeo in the West. He has two sets of spurs for winning the steer wrestling here in 2005 and 2007. Suhn, who has qualified for 12 Wrangler National Finals Rodeos (NFR) and is currently fourth in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) World Standings.
“You never get tired of winning,” Suhn said. “I haven’t won a dime here the last three years, but it hasn’t kept me from coming back. The steers are all fresh and everybody has the same opportunity. It just worked out for me.”
Other former champions that did well here on Tuesday night were Jesse Bail in the saddle bronc riding, Joseph Parsons in the tie-down roping, Rhen Richard in team roping and Linda Vick in the women’s barrel race.
Bail, from Camp Crook, S.D., won the saddle bronc riding here in 2002. He had the high-marked ride of the night at 80 points on Western Rodeo’s horse named Big City. That’s setting fourth in the first round. He has his second round horse here on Wednesday and if he does well again will be here Saturday night for the finals.
Joseph Parsons, from Marana, Ariz., was last year’s tie-down roping winner and took a big lead in the over-all standings on Tuesday. He had times of 9.3 and 8.5 seconds to give him a total of 17.8 seconds on two head. This is a full second ahead of Shane Hanchey from Sulphur, La.
Rhen Richard was making a run for the PRCA Team Roping Rookie of the Year award in 2008 when he won the Reno Rodeo. He got Nick Sartain from Yukon, Okla., to come do the heading and it was the beginning of a trend that helped Richard obtain his goal. This year he is heeling for his brother Kaden. The Roosevelt, Utah residents moved into seventh in the over-all standings and will be anxiously waiting to see if they remain in the top 12 and qualify for the finals.
In the barrel race it was Linda Vick from Hesperia, Calif., that took the victory lap and the rodeo by storm. Vick has the fastest time of the rodeo at 17.01 seconds. That’s in the lead in the second round. She won this rodeo in 2005 en route to a NFR qualification. Vick is tied for sixth in the over-all standings.
The sixth performance of the 10-day Reno Rodeo begins at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. The rodeo is streaming live on LoadedTV.com
