VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) - Radio transmissions from a northwest Indiana sheriff's department show a handcuffed man who allegedly
stole a police car told authorities they should tell him where to find the handcuff keys if they want to help him.

A man tells police in the calls released Tuesday that he needs to remove the handcuffs so he can hold the steering wheel correctly. He also tells police if they can't tell him where the handcuff keys are, they should at least tell him where the cigarette lighter is because he could think better if he had a smoke.

Twenty-two-year-old William Francis Blankenship of Knox surrendered Thursday, two days after he allegedly stole the police car in Kouts, 50 miles southeast of Chicago. He remains jailed without bond on a preliminary auto theft charge.
