A series of earthquakes, the strongest registering 5.5 to 5.7, shook northern Nevada shortly early Wednesday morning. The were felt over a wide area but the quakes shook hardest in Hawthorne just 18 miles from the epicenter.
More than 540,000 Nevadans are already registered to participate in the annual statewide public earthquake drill, according to the University of Nevada, Reno. But the university's hope is to add 100,000 to that number for the Great Nevada Shakeout.
