Gibbons, Reid Fighting Over Rail Project

Posted: 09/24/2009 - CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Gov. Jim Gibbons and U.S. Sen. Harry Reid are sparring over $45 million once earmarked to help pay for a high-speed maglev rail project between southern Nevada and California. A spokesman for the Republican governor last week said the money from the federal government was on its way. On Wednesday, federal Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood sent a letter to Gibbons, saying he was mistaken. A Reid spokesman says the Senate Majority Leader earlier supported the maglev project, but has since abandoned it because backers have taken too long to move forward. Reid instead now supports a competing trail project, the DesertXpress train, and wants to shift the funding to Nevada road and highway projects.
