LAS VEGAS (AP) - The wife of a Philippines senator has been sentenced to five months of house arrest and probation after pleading guilty in Las Vegas to smuggling cash.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials say 55-year-old Marissa Tadeo Lapid was sentenced Feb. 4. She'd pleaded guilty to bulk cash smuggling and conspiracy to structure transactions to evade reporting requirements.
She's also being ordered to pay a $40,000 fine and forfeit nearly $200,000 derived from the scheme.
Investigators say Lapid first came under suspicion in November 2010 when she failed to declare $40,000 in cash found under the lining of her suitcase at the airport.
Investigators say she'd previously conspired with others to make numerous smaller deposits in Las Vegas to go around reporting requirements.
Lapid is married to Sen. Manuel "Lito" Lapid.
