LAS VEGAS (AP) - A projected record enrollment of 320,000 children are beginning a new school year in the Las Vegas area.

Meanwhile, administrators in the nation's fifth-largest school district say they're facing funding, space and teacher shortages.

Clark County School Superintendent Pat Skorkowsky tells the Las Vegas Sun for a Monday report that more elementary schools will go to year-round schedules to ease overcrowding.

District officials say some $3.5 billion in building and repair projects are needed to extend the life of older schools and reduce crowding. That's 10 times more than the amount available over the next few years.

Even after hiring more than 1,500 teachers, the district is starting the 2014-15 year with more than 600 teacher positions open.

Officials say they'll fill positions for now with long-term substitute teachers.
