LAS VEGAS (AP) - School administrators in Las Vegas plan to add at least 1,700 new teachers for the 2013-14 school year, in a bid to cut class sizes.

Deputy Clark County school superintendent Pat Skorkowsky said in a statement the goal was to cut class sizes by about two students per class.

The Las Vegas Sun reports the hiring will bring the number of licensed personnel in the nation's fifth-largest school district to nearly 19,000.

Officials say $23 million for the effort comes from a recent arbitration decision in a teachers union contract dispute.

The district plans to focus on hiring elementary teachers and those specializing in science, technology, math and special education.

Clark County schools have record high enrollment of more than 311,000 students this year at more than 350 campuses.
