SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah Republicans are hoping to host the 2016 Republican National Convention in Salt Lake City and are looking to put together an official bid.

Salt Lake City was a finalist along with Phoenix for hosting the 2012 GOP convention, but Tampa was ultimately selected.

Utah Republican Party Chairman James Evans says because Utah is a heavily Republican state, hosting the convention is a great way to show off the party's policies at work.

But the Utah GOP would have to compete with their Nevada neighbors, as Republicans in that state are hoping to bring the event to Las Vegas, a favorite spot for conventions.

The national party is expected to make a decision next spring
