LAS VEGAS (AP) - Environmentalists and Indians are asking a federal court to order utility company NV Energy to clean up land and water they say has been contaminated by an aging coal-fired power plant slated for closure beginning next year outside Las Vegas.

The Sierra Club and Moapa Band of Paiutes who live near the Reid-Gardner plant want a judge to declare that the publicly traded company conducted operations for years that endangered the public health.

They're seeking a court order to clean up contaminants they believe have been illegally dumped into the Muddy River.

NV Energy declined to comment on the lawsuit filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Las Vegas.

But company spokeswoman Kelly Mulroy says the plant 40 miles northeast of Las Vegas fully complies with state and federal laws.
