SLOAN, Nev. (AP) - Las Vegas police say a weekend explosion that badly injured one target shooter and slightly injured two others in the desert south of Las Vegas was an accident.
Police Officer Laura Meltzer said Monday that investigators determined that the man was mixing legally obtained materials for an explosive target when the blast occurred a little after 8:30 a.m. Sunday on federal land near Sloan.
Meltzer says the man, about 60 years old, received serious injuries to his hands and arms. His name wasn't made public.
Meltzer says the man's friends took him to a hospital in Henderson before he was transferred to the University Medical Center trauma center in Las Vegas.
Meltzer says police and Bureau of Land Management investigators were checking whether the men trespassed on federal land.
