Teen Pleads Guilty in Campus Rifle Case

LAS VEGAS (AP) - A teenager pleaded guilty to bringing an assault rifle to his former Las Vegas high school in a plea deal that will get him a psychiatric evaluation before sentencing.

A court clerk said 19-year-old Jake Benton Howell pleaded guilty Thursday to one gross misdemeanor charge of possession of a dangerous weapon on school property.

Howell could face up to a year in the Clark County jail at sentencing April 4.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports he'll get a psychiatric evaluation first.

Howell was arrested with an unloaded SKS rifle, ammunition and survival-style knives in his car at Northwest Career and Technical Academy on Dec. 21.

The date was the end of the ancient Mayan calendar and the one-week anniversary a deadly elementary school shooting in Newtown, Conn.
