LAS VEGAS (AP) - A teenage college student arrested with an unloaded assault rifle at his former Las Vegas high school is due for an evidence hearing on criminal charges that could get him several years in jail.
A judge could decide Tuesday that 19-year-old Jake Benton Howell should face trial in state court on five charges of possession of a dangerous weapon on school grounds.
Howell is a student at Utah Valley University.
Police were looking for him when he arrived at his former school Dec. 21 with an SKS rifle, ammunition, a 16-inch bayonet and three survival-style knives in his car.
Howell told investigators he collected the items in anticipation of the collapse of society.
Authorities had linked Howell to another teen currently facing federal weapon charges in Las Vegas.
