CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - A proposal by Gov. Brian Sandoval to set aside $2 million for a nonprofit group that recruits teachers for at-risk schools received a friendly reception from the Senate Finance Committee.
The funding for Teach for American was part of Sandoval's overall budget proposal, but it was pulled after running into opposition from some Democrats on the Assembly Ways and Means Committee. The money would help recruit teachers to Clark County.
Critics oppose setting aside money for one specific group. They also complain the money should go to help teachers and school districts statewide.
The Clark County School District has been involved with the program since 2004 and last year had 95 teachers in at-risk schools recruited by Teach for America.
