CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Southern Nevada is getting a new area code after officials said they were on pace to run out of 702 phone numbers in two years.
The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada announced Thursday that a 725 area code will be introduced starting in June 2014.
PUC officials say it will be an "overlay" area code, meaning it will include the same geographical area as the 702 area code. New telephone numbers will be assigned the new area code, while existing customers will keep the 702.
Residents will also have to adjust to dialing 10 numbers instead of seven when making local calls.
Officials say southern Nevada customers can make local calls with or without dialing the 702 starting in August, but must enter an area code starting in May 2014.
