LAS VEGAS (AP) - Southern Nevada health officials want residents to swear off soda this summer.
The health district launched its Soda Free Summer Initiative on Monday, and encouraged adults and children to take a soda-free pledge at the Get Healthy Clark County website.
Officials say they're also working with the City of Henderson to implement a curriculum called Sugar Savvy in the city's summer camp programs.
The agency cites research linking the consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks with higher rates of obesity and oral health problems. Officials say cutting back soda consumption by a drink a day can reduce calorie intake by about 150 and lower the risk of sugar-related ailments.
