Sandoval Urges Federal Online Poker Legislation

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval is backing efforts for a federal law to regulate online poker, saying Internet gambling goes beyond what individual states can regulate.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal says Sandoval's position is a split from the National Governors Association. In a letter to congressional leaders, the group said a proposal being drafted would restrict states from pursing legalized gambling on their own and the revenue it could bring for schools and other programs.

But Sandoval said the legislation drafted by Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Republican Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona was worth considering.

Nevada would stand to gain if Internet poker is legalized.

Sandoval says Internet gambling is inevitable and that online wagering brings new regulatory challenges that states cannot address on their own.
