LAS VEGAS (AP) - A retired Henderson firefighter has been convicted of tax evasion after prosecutors say he dramatically understated how much he was earning from the city.
Officials say 53-year-old Dwight C. Jackson was convicted by a jury Wednesday on five counts of willful tax evasion and one count of filing a fictitious claim.
He faces up to 30 years in prison and $1.5 million in fines at sentencing Jan. 28.
Prosecutors say Jackson made more than $113,000 each year between 2004 and 2008, but claimed he made much less. Authorities say that in 2009, he claimed he earned no wages, but actually earned more than $247,000 from the city.
Prosecutors say he got help from a California man he met in a group of sovereign citizens, who believe taxation is illegitimate.
