LAS VEGAS (AP) - Clark County's request for federal disaster aid for southern Nevada victims of flash flooding in September has been denied.

Federal officials notified Clark County officials that the Sept. 11 flooding failed to meet the criteria for a disaster declaration.

Seventy-three homes and nine businesses were damaged by a storm that dumped up to a record 2.05 inches of rain around Las Vegas on Sept. 11.

Federal officials say damage to buildings, roads and other public infrastructure was estimated at $1.4 million, well below the required $6.6 million threshold for a federal disaster declaration.

The hardest hit areas were neighborhoods near the Desert Rose Golf Course and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus.

County Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani says the denial was disappointing because many residents didn't have flood insurance.
