LAS VEGAS (AP) - A judge has ordered a mental health evaluation for a Kansas felon accused of robbing the Bellagio hotel-casino in Las Vegas of $43,500.

During Friday's hearing, 34-year-old Scott Carmitchel refused to speak as he sat in a wheelchair. His hands and feet were shackled, and he wore a mask to prevent him from spitting at anyone.

His court-appointed attorney told U.S. Magistrate Judge Peggy Leen that Carmitchel is even refusing to speak to her.

Leen says a mental evaluation is needed to determine whether Carmitchel is competent to stand trial.

He's accused of robbing a Bellagio casino cashier at gunpoint on July 25 and celebrating after the heist with prostitutes and a spending spree on the Las Vegas Strip.

Kansas Department of Corrections records show Carmitchel served time for battery against a law officer and a robbery in 1998, and he was sent to prison most recently a year ago for making a criminal threat.
