MESQUITE, Nev. (AP) - A police officer and a gunman were wounded in shootout on a main street in the Nevada resort city of Mesquite.
Mesquite Police Officer Jeffrey Smith says the officer was wounded in the leg when a man in a maroon 1996 Geo Metro with Utah license plates fired at least one shot during a traffic stop just before 8 a.m. Thursday.
Smith says the gunman was wounded by return fire. The shooting happened on Sandhill Boulevard - just off the Interstate 15 exit at Pioneer Boulevard.
A Utah woman in the car wasn't hurt.
Mesquite Police Chief Troy Tanner identifies the officer as Craig Empey.
Smith says Empey was treated at Mesa View Regional Hospital in Mesquite and released.
The gunman is hospitalized at University Medical Center in Las Vegas.
