CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - A Nevada legislative panel has approved
shifting money from one agency to another to restore child care
subsidies for the working poor.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that despite legal questions, the Legislature's Interim Finance Committee endorsed spending $1 million on child care for 243 children so their parents can continue working.
An attorney general's opinion is being sought on the legality of
transferring the money from the Department of Employment, Training
and Rehabilitation reserves to the state Welfare Division.
A welfare administrator says there is a waiting list of 600 children from 340 families requesting assistance. Funds for child care are given only to families with incomes at or just above poverty levels.
