LAS VEGAS (AP) - A Las Vegas police officer is getting credit for pulling a homeless woman from a fire whipped up by windy weather.

Las Vegas fire officials say the officer was patrolling the West Las Vegas area about 4 a.m. Thursday when he noticed a fire outside a vacant house on F Street.

Authorities say he saw a woman under some blankets next to the fire who appeared to be drunk, and pulled her out before trying to put out the flames with an extinguisher.

Crews were able to extinguish the fire, but not until after it spread into the attic area of the home.

Damage is estimated at $40,000.

Investigators say it appears the woman started a warming fire under the house's carport, but high winds pushed it toward the structure.
