CARSON CITY, Nev. – There is now additional fallout from the “patient dumping” investigation surrounding the Rawson-Neal Psychiatric Hospital in Las Vegas.

Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval issued a statement Monday announcing further disciplinary action being taken.

“Over the weekend, I reviewed the results of the investigation into patients transported out of state. All individuals who violated release policies have been or will be disciplined. These disciplinary actions include terminations effective today. While the investigation showed the vast majority of patient releases were done correctly, it also revealed policies were not followed by certain individuals. I will continue to evaluate the need for further action if necessary”, Sandoval said.

Both the San Francisco Chronicle and the Sacramento Bee have been writing extensively about this practice, called “Greyhound Therapy”. They claim as many as 1500 patients out of Las Vegas have been bused to towns outside of Nevada. One third of them go the California according to the Sacramento Bee.

James Flavy Coy Brown suffers from schizophrenia, depression, and anxiety. He claims a doctor at the Las Vegas Hospital gave him a Greyhound Bus ticket, his medication and peanut butter crackers for a three day bus ride to Sacramento where there were no family or friends.

According to the Governor’s camp, a full review was done of the 1500 patients who were transported out of the state since 2008.

Sandoval added, “In addition, we have obtained proposals from national experts in the mental health field to provide an objective and comprehensive analysis of our state facilities to ensure that best practices are being implemented and followed. As I have stated before, improperly discharging one patient is one patient too many. It is important to me and all Nevadans that we treat our most vulnerable members of society with dignity and care.”
