POMONA, Calif. (AP) - A Nevada man is facing life in prison without possibility of parole for the stabbing death of an aspiring model from Long Beach more than 27 years ago.
A Los Angeles County jury on Monday convicted 56-year-old Stafford Spicer of murder and special circumstances. He will be sentenced on Oct. 12.
The San Gabriel Valley Tribune says 23-year-old Joanne Marie Jones disappeared after leaving for work in April 1985. Her body was found weeks later by hikers in remote Azusa Canyon.
Spicer was arrested after being spotted driving the victim's 1978 Chevrolet Camaro in Long Beach. But there was insufficient evidence to pursue murder charges and the Las Vegas man was released.
Sheriff's cold case Detective Steve Davis re-opened the case in 2009. DNA evidence led to charges.
