MESQUITE, Nev. (AP) - A 36-year-old Mesquite woman has been arrested after police say she falsely claimed her 7-year-old son had cancer and tried to profit from the scheme.
Mesquite police say Shawnanna Starr Flores surrendered Monday evening after she was told about a warrant for her arrest. She was booked on 95 misdemeanor charges, including 32 counts of obtaining money by false pretenses, 29 counts of larceny, one count of obstructing an officer and 32 counts of unlawful acts involving data transmission.
Police say that after Flores told people her son had a rare form of liver cancer, several fundraisers were organized on his behalf, including a car wash and a garage sale.
She was initially arrested in early September on more severe felony charges, but those were never filed.
