LAS VEGAS (AP) - A jury in Las Vegas has found a 33-year-old man
guilty of murder in the 2007 machete slaying of a woman who took
him in off the streets.
Victor Orlando Cruz-Garcia was convicted Thursday of
first-degree murder in the death of 46-year-old Beatrice Alvarez.
He's also been convicted of two counts of attempted murder for
attacking Alvarez's 27-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports the jury is expected to decide next week whether Cruz-Garcia will get the death penalty.
Authorities say Cruz-Garcia attacked the three with the machete
on Dec. 20, 2007, in their apartment northeast of downtown Las
Vegas.
Police say doctors had to reattach the arm and a finger of
Alvarez's son, while the daughter was treated for cuts to her head
and face.
