LAS VEGAS (AP) - A 22-year-old Las Vegas man has been ordered to 13 to 40 years in prison in the beating death of his then-girlfriend's baby boy four years ago.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports Jocquise Coleman was sentenced Thursday in the death of 16-month-old Lamaj Terry. Coleman had pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, child abuse and neglect in the September 2009 incident.
Prosecutors say Coleman was taking care of Lamaj while the boy's mother was at work.
Neighbors reported hearing shouts from an apartment and found the boy unresponsive there. Lamaj was pronounced dead at the hospital with head and abdominal injuries.
Coleman fled, but was arrested several days later.
The boy's mother, Brittany Terry, said at a sentencing hearing that she could forgive Coleman, but would never forget.
