LAS VEGAS (AP) - Authorities have identified a 26-year-old man who shot himself dead in a courtyard at a Las Vegas Mormon temple as the son of Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Jay Bybee.
The Clark County coroner says Scott Greer Bybee of Henderson died in the shooting that police say happened a little before 6:30 p.m. Tuesday while services were being conducted at the campus on Temple View Drive.
Police Officer Bill Cassell says no one else was hurt. Temple services were cancelled afterward.
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints spokeswoman Kristen Howey issued a statement calling the incident tragic, and saying the church was mindful of all those involved.
An executive at the San Francisco-based appeals court says Jay Bybee isn't available and isn't making any immediate comment.
