LAS VEGAS (AP) - Authorities are investigating the death of a man who jumped from an overpass while running from a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper near a key Las Vegas freeway crossroads.
NHP Trooper Jeremie Elliott says the trooper was trying to approach the unidentified man after he was seen walking a little before 4:30 a.m. Friday on the westbound 215 Beltway overpass at Decatur Boulevard.
Elliott says the man jumped a cement center barrier toward the eastbound freeway lanes when he fell through a gap to the road below.
The westbound 215 freeway remained closed until about 9 a.m. just west of the busy Interstate 15 exchange.
He was pronounced dead at a hospital a short time later.
Elliott says Las Vegas police are investigating the case as an in-custody death.
