HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) - A Henderson man who fired a machine gun in his backyard on New Year's Eve almost two years ago has been ordered to a year and a day in prison.
Officials say 38-year-old John Mackey was sentenced after pleading guilty in May to one count of machine gun possession. It's illegal to have a machine gun that's not registered with the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record.
Henderson police say gunfire was reported just after midnight Jan. 1, 2011, at a backyard in the Anthem neighborhood. Officers say Mackey told him he shot the weapon into the ground because he said he wasn't "stupid enough to shoot it in the air."
Police searching the house found numerous guns, including a rifle that was converted into a fully automatic machine gun.
