LAS VEGAS (AP) - A 41-year-old man who pleaded guilty to killing his girlfriend's toddler in 2009 has been sentenced in Las Vegas to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

KSNV reports William Marshall was sentenced Monday in the death of 21-month-old Shia Travis.

A coroner's report says the girl was sexually assaulted and beaten before two men looking for aluminum cans found her body in an apartment complex trash bin in Las Vegas.

Marshall had pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in August. But at his sentencing hearing, he called into question some of the allegations of sexual assault.

The girl's mother, Darrean Williams, has not been charged in the case. She told police she had gone to Arizona for work and had left her daughter in her boyfriend's care.
