LAS VEGAS (AP) - A 28-year-old Las Vegas man has been sentenced to eight months in jail for pointing a green laser light at several commercial airliners and a police helicopter near McCarran International Airport.
U.S. Attorney Daniel Bogden says U.S. District Judge Miranda Du in Las Vegas also sentenced Michael Viera-Crespo Jr., on Tuesday to three years of supervised release.
Viera-Crespo pleaded guilty in March to attempted destruction of an aircraft. He has been in federal custody since March 27.
Viera-Crespo was accused of shining a laser on Aug. 31, 2011, into the cockpit of at least three commercial aircraft approaching the Las Vegas airport.
Authorities say lasers can temporarily diminish eyesight or blind pilots, and the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 now prohibits aiming a laser pointer at an aircraft.
