Man Arrested After Shooting Daughter's Boyfriend

PAHRUMP, Nev. (AP) - A 68-year-old Pahrump man is behind bars after deputies say he shot his daughter's boyfriend after the couple got in a physical fight.

Nye County deputies say Randall Phelps wasn't acting in self defense or defending another person when he shot Benjamin Appleby twice Wednesday afternoon.

Appleby was taken to University Medical Center in critical condition.

Authorities responded to a home in Pahrump about 5 p.m. Wednesday and found Appleby lying in the driveway bleeding.

Detectives say that Appleby and his girlfriend had been fighting before Appleby and his girlfriend's dad got in a fight of their own. Authorities say Phelps then pulled out a gun.

Phelps has been booked on suspicion of attempted murder and battery with a deadly weapon.
