LAS VEGAS (AP) - Prosecutors want time to investigate whether a
federal judge should remove himself from a criminal tax case
against a former Las Vegas Strip nightclub operator.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that Justice Department lawyers asked U.S. District Judge Kent Dawson to delay a hearing until Aug. 20.
Dawson last Wednesday sentenced Steve Davidovici to three years'
probation and eight months' home confinement, plus about $141,000
in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service.
Dawson said he feared the 48-year-old Davidovici couldn't get
proper treatment in prison for a degenerative eye condition.
Prosecutors sought 18 months in prison for Davidovici for concealing millions of dollars in tips from tax collectors.
On Thursday, Dawson disclosed that his 38-year-old son might
have worked as a bartender at a nightclub associated with Davidovici.
