LAS VEGAS (AP) - Efforts are underway to bring the 2016 National Republican Convention to Las Vegas.
The Nevada Host Committee was announced Tuesday. Republican Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki is chairman of the group, which is supported by Nevada businesses, the hospitality industry and others.
Several cities have expressed interest in hosting the event, including Salt Lake City, Detroit, Phoenix, St. Louis and Charlotte, N.C.
Krolicki says Las Vegas is the top convention destination in North America and with nearly 150,000 hotel rooms is uniquely positioned to host Republicans for the 2016 presidential nominating convention.
Jack St. Martin will serve as executive director of the host committee. He has held several positions with the Republican National Committee and helped bring a GOP presidential primary debate to Las Vegas in the last election.
