LAS VEGAS (AP) - Several protesters who wrote anti-police messages on sidewalks outside Las Vegas police headquarters and the downtown regional courthouse are finding that authorities aren't chalking it up as a prank.

Police and prosecutors are charging four people with misdemeanor conspiracy and graffiti in a case that could get each a year or more in jail.

The four call themselves members of the Sunset Activist Collective.

Their lawyer, Robert Langford, calls it a horrible misuse of police time and energy to retaliate against people exercising their constitutional rights to protest.

He says the same standard could be used to jail a child for drawing a hopscotch pattern on the sidewalk.

Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson says these are adults who were warned and ticketed before they deliberately broke the law.
