LAS VEGAS (AP) - Former Nevada Congresswoman Shelley Berkley has been named chief of the Nevada and California campuses of Touro University.
The nonprofit Jewish-sponsored higher education system announced the hire Wednesday.
Berkley served as a Democrat in Congress from 1999 to 2013 and narrowly lost a 2012 bid for Senate to Republican contender Dean Heller.
She will begin as CEO and senior provost of Touro's western division starting in January.
Touro was established in 1970 and enrolls about 19,000 students at campuses in New York, Berlin, Jerusalem, Moscow, Paris, Florida, California and Nevada.
The school offers programs in education, nursing, physical therapy and other fields.
