LAS VEGAS (AP) - Former Nevada Supreme Court Justice Miriam Shearing, who broke the gender barrier for women in Nevada's judiciary, is being honored as recipient of the high court's "Legacy of Justice" Award.
Shearing was the first woman elected as Justice of the Peace in Las Vegas in 1976. In 1982, she became Nevada's first woman to be elected a District Court judge. And in 1992 she was the first woman elected to the state's high court, where she served until her retirement in 2005.
Supreme Court Chief Justice Michael Cherry says Shearing shattered the glass ceiling at the Nevada judiciary. She continues to hear cases as a senior justice and district judge.
Shearing will be honored Monday during a noon ceremony at the Regional Justice Center in Las Vegas.
