LAS VEGAS (AP) - Officials say a fire in a vacant apartment on Las Vegas' east side has displaced three people and caused about $35,000 in damage.

Fire and Rescue spokesman Timothy Szymanski says the blaze early Monday was limited to a second story unit at Charleston Garden Apartments on Charleston Boulevard.

Szymanski says in a statement the building was evacuated and Las Vegas and Clark County firefighters extinguished the flames a few minutes after they arrived.

The unit on fire was vacant and residents told investigators that squatters had been occupying some of the empty units at the apartment complex.

Szymanski says no injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

The apartment below had some water damage and three people who lived in that unit have been displaced.
